Early Orthodontic Treatment

Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and Southbay

Orthodontic treatments like braces are often associated with one’s teenage years, but the ideal time to address bite problems (or malocclusions) depends more on a child’s individual condition than age.

Manhattan Beach orthodontist Dr. JD Miller understands that early diagnosis and treatment of orthodontic issues can often simplify or reduce the duration of later procedures. At Surfside Smiles, we welcome young patients; please call us at 310-947-1810 to schedule your child’s complimentary initial orthodontic consultation.

Advantages of an Early Orthodontic Visit

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children undergo an orthodontic exam around 7 years of age. By this time, most children have their initial permanent molar teeth and the incisors have emerged.

At this stage of development, an orthodontist can assess a child for potential bite conditions—or malocclusions—and identify irregularly spaced teeth. While orthodontic treatment may not be advised at this age, the early examination can detect future issues and help anticipate treatment options.

In some circumstances, early treatment while bone structure is still developing can result in shorter, less intensive treatments later in life.

Children and Bite Structure

As children’s permanent teeth erupt, an orthodontist can evaluate bite structure and the spacing of the teeth. During early orthodontic exams, Dr. Miller can assess the development of conditions including:

  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Protruding teeth

Depending on a child’s unique condition, early orthodontic treatment may be recommended to:

  • Create room for crowded teeth
  • Guide emerging teeth into proper position
  • Establish proper alignment for teeth during continued jaw development
  • Prevent the need for future tooth removal

The early treatment of some bite conditions can also reduce the risk for premature teeth wear, teeth decay and periodontal disease among other problems.
